Weekend box office: 'Glass' tops quiet Super Bowl weekend

Weekend Box Office: February 1-3, 2019

(KUTV) In the vacuum of Super Bowl weekend, February kicked off with an unexpectedly slow weekend that saw only one major release, Sony’s “Miss Bala” and the expansion of Peter Jackson’s World War I documentary “They Shall Not Grow Old.”

This allowed “Glass” to retain the top spot at the domestic box office for the third weekend in a row. The third film in M. Night Shyamalan’s Eastrail 177 series of super hero films was made for just $20 million and is now on the verge of surpassing $200 million at the worldwide box office. 2000’s “Unbreakable” finished with a worldwide total of $248 million and 2017’s “Split” finished with $278 million.

In second place is “The Upside” with $8.8 million. Now in its fourth week, the remake of the French film “Les Intouchables” stars Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston as an ex-con who mistakenly stumbles into an interview to care for a wealthy man with quadriplegia. Pulled from the ash heap that is the Weinstein Company by STX Entertainment, “The Upside” has now earned $75.5 million domestically.

Miss Bala” finished its opening weekend in third place with $6.7 million against a $15 million budget. The action-thriller remake was directed by Catherine Hardwicke and stars Gina Rodriguez.

Now in its seventh weekend, “Aquaman” earned an additional $4.7 million. Its worldwide total is now $1.1 billion.

The top five is rounded out by “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” with $4.4 million. The Oscar nominated animated feature has now earned $175 million in North America and $347 million worldwide.

They Shall Not Grow Old” just made the top ten with $2.4 million.

Next week sees the release of "The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part." The original film from 2014 opened with $69 million and finished with a worldwide total of $469 million.
